This December, ring in the new year around one of Japan’s most scenic spots.
You might know Hakone for the beautiful Lake Ashi or the photogenic torii gate at Hakone Shrine. At the beginning of each year, the shrine hosts several interesting traditional festivities, including fireworks.
What to expect
At the stroke of midnight on December 31, the skies above Lake Ashi will come alive with fireworks. Spend a relaxing day in Hakone beforehand, and then settle in for the lights to bring in the New Year. After the fireworks, head to the shrine to pray, although queues are usually long.
Schedule 2023/24
Besides the fireworks, there will be a number of other activities to enjoy. On December 31, the New Year Festival begins at 9:30 p.m. This includes a burning of old bills. As the night turns into January 1, fireworks will take off from Motohakone Bay for around 15 minutes.
Note: To prevent overcrowding, you can not visit the famous Heiwa Torii at Hakone Shrine from December 29, 2023 to February 9, 2024.
How to get there
You can get from Tokyo to Hakone in around 1 hour and 30 minutes, but you’ll need to grab a hotel in Hakone if you are looking to catch the fireworks.
